Q: When can I make iʿtikāf? Are there any preferred times?
A: You can perform iʿtikāf at any time of the year. As established by consensus, iʿtikāf is a recommended practice (sunnah) at all times, whether day or night, weekday or weekend. The Prophet ﷺ regularly performed iʿtikāf as a means of drawing closer to Allah, and his wives continued the practice both during his lifetime and after his passing.
However, some times are more virtuous than others. The most emphasized time for iʿtikāf is during the month of Ramadan, and within Ramadan, the last ten nights are the most virtuous and recommended time. This is because the Prophet ﷺ increased his devotion during the final ten nights, seeking Laylat al-Qadr—the Night of Decree—which is better than a thousand months.
